Tonto National Monument was established to preserve, protect and interpret prehistoric two prehistoric cliff dwellings, other archaeological sites, and the natural resources of the Upper Sonoran ecosystem. The Monument is over 1120 acres of desert environment comprised of diverse plant and animals including many species of cacti, snakes, bees, scorpions, lizards and tarantulas. The Monument ranges in elevation from 2300' to 4000' and temperatures in this high desert location may range from 30 to 115 degrees Fahrenheit. This position is stationed at Roosevelt, AZ. This position serves as a cultural resource specialist for Tonto National Monument where archeological resources comprise a major part of the park story. Major duties for the position will include:
Serving as an advisor to park management on cultural resources. Identifing, evaluating, and monitoring cultural resources, identifing potential threats, and making recommendations to management regarding status and mitigation of impacts (present and future). Representing the superintendent when working with others on archeological matters. Developing and maintain effective working relations with related groups and individuals, agencies, and the public. Attending management and professional conferences and other events for the purposes of exchanging information and advancing advocacy for park stewardship. Making significant contributions to the preparation of historic preservation documentation, compliance, and background materials for clearances, permits, licenses, etc., as required by Section 106 and Section 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), Archeological Resources Protection Act (ARPA), NPS Management Policies, and cultural resources management guideline for planning and construction projects that involve cultural resources for all park undertakings. Duties will be developmental in nature when filled below the full performance level. All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-06/28/2020-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect either full-time or 40 hours per week. If a part-time work schedule is reflected, the hours must be annotated to ensure proper crediting of specialized experience. To qualify for this position at the GS-9 grade level, you must possess the basic and minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
Successful completion a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included 3 semester hours each in the following course areas:
1) History of archeology; 2) Archeology of a major geographic area such as North America; 3) Regional Archeology, archeological cultures or sites in a specific part of a major geographical area to acquire or develop a foundation for regional specialization for professional development; 4) Theory and methods of archeology. Methods include, but are not limited to, typology, classification, sampling, cultural evolution, diffusion, dating and analytical techniques; 5) Archeological field school, to provide a basic understanding of theoretical and practical approaches to research design implementation, field preservation techniques and report preparation by participation in actual field work; AND 6 semester hours of related course work in:
1) geography, geology, or cultural geography; 2) history; historiography, or historical archeology; 3) environmental studies; 4) scientific writing (nonfiction English composition); and/or 5) surveying; AND Archeological field school. You must submit a college transcript (official or unofficial) to verify this claim. Failure to include your transcript(s) will make you ineligible for this position .-OR- Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in a related curriculum:
Anthropology (with emphasis on ethnology, physical anthropology, or scientific linguistics); history; American studies or a related discipline provided the curriculum supplies academic course work sufficiently similar to the requirements shown above including archeological field school. You must submit a transcript (official or unofficial) to verify this claim. Failure to include your transcript(s) will make you ineligible for this position .-OR- A combination of college-level education or training that provides the knowledge equivalent to that described above, plus appropriate technical experience or additional education. Transcripts are required .-OR- Four years of archeological work experience that demonstrated a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional archeology. The work experience must have included archeology field experience, which may include that gained in an archeological field school. Field experience should have included a combination of professional experience in archeology survey, excavation, laboratory analysis, and preparation of written materials. Applicants with such field experience should, after additional experience under the direction of a higher graded archeologist, be able to demonstrate the ability to be a crew chief, directing the work of others at a single location as part of a larger archeological project. - AND - To qualify for this position at the GS-09 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
Experience:
At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as:
Leading a crew on archeological activities including assisting with or drafting portions of cultural resource management plans, or assisting with the management of cultural projects. Conducted archeological investigations, condition assessments and preservation treatments; prepared reports on archeological investigations; prepared Section 106 compliance documentation for submittal to the State Historic Preservation Office; experience conducting historical and archeological field investigations and report preparation, surveying and monitoring archeological sites and other cultural resources; interpreting and summarizing technical archeological data and information in written reports. . You must include hours per week worked. -OR- EDUCATION:
Successful completion of at least 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or equivalent graduate degree (36 semester hours or 54 quarter hours) in an accredited educational institution concentrated in a field that is directly related to the work of this position, in archaeology, anthropology, or other directly-related subject matter. You must include transcripts. -OR- Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. I have an equivalent combination of such education and experience. For example, I have 6 months of the specialized experience equivalent to GS-07 (50 percent of the experience requirement) and 27 semester hours or 41 quarter hours of appropriate directly related graduate education (50 percent of the education requirement). The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
